How live music in Amsterdam actually works

The city's live-music spine runs through a few legendary rooms: Paradiso (a converted church on the Leidseplein), Melkweg next door, the Concertgebouw for classical, and the arena-scale AFAS Live and Ziggo Dome out at the ArenA complex for touring headliners. Around them sit smaller stages, Bitterzoet, OT301, Tolhuistuin across the IJ, and the jazz rooms. Doors for club-size shows are usually 7 to 8 PM (19:00 to 20:00); the main act follows an hour or so later.

Prices span widely. A local optreden or club show is often €10 to €25, a touring act in a mid-size room €30 to €60, and arena shows at Ziggo Dome or AFAS Live more. Many venues run cheap or free early-evening sessions and late-night programming on the same night, so one building can hold a concert and a club night back to back.

We track new shows from venue agendas, promoter announcements and the ticketing that Amsterdam venues use, and list concerts, festivals and one-off optredens across genres. Whether you are after a Paradiso indie bill, a Concertgebouw recital or a Melkweg touring act, the coming weeks are on this page.

    Concert glossary

    Optreden
Dutch for a gig or live performance. You will see it in venue agendas and event titles; it covers everything from a bar set to a ticketed concert.
    Paradiso
A former church near Leidseplein, now the city's most famous mid-size concert hall. The main hall and the smaller "Kleine Zaal" upstairs run different bills the same night.
    Zaal
Dutch for "hall" or "room". Venues list a "Grote Zaal" (main hall) and "Kleine Zaal" (small hall); the room tells you the scale of the show.
    Voorprogramma
The support act or opener (literally "fore-programme"). Goes on after doors, before the headliner.
    Ziggo Dome
The 17,000-capacity arena out by the Johan Cruijff ArenA, where the biggest touring acts play. AFAS Live sits next door at a smaller arena scale.
